Thank you Gilles.... it now makes sense:

Settings -> Configure Digikam -> Image Editor -> Raw Default Setting -> 
set as required

then:

Settings -> Configure Digikam -> Image Editor -> Raw Behavior -> Use 
default [16|8] bit
