Setting metadata for a few images (like 500) freezes digikam.

This option from Exiv2 is not finalized. The Exiv2 treads to support
this feature sound like the option is too dangerous. RAW must still
read only. There is a risk to corrup RAW files. I recommend to not
touch this option.
