Digikam 5.4.0 won't start on Windows

I had the same problem with digiKam V5.1 und V5.2 on Window 10.  From one
day to another, it didn't start up anymore.
The process was running, but stale. The digiKam window didn't show up.

Below is what I did to solve the problem. I posted it on Sept. 28th to this
mailing list.

My suspicion is that there are some problems with migration of digiKam
settings from V4.x, or from V5.1.
But this is just a suspicion and this problem might disappear in the future
as more and more digiKam user work with V5.x.
