Imac running OS 10.9 with Xcode 5.0.2, Xcode Command Line Tools extension
package for Maverick, MacPort, and digikam (3.5.0).

    Following the directions in Step #3
(https://trac.macports.org/wiki/howto/MAMP#mysql), I have installed Mysql
server as indicated by

X Terminal
bash-3.2$ sudo port load mysql5-server
Password:
org.macports.mysql5: Already loaded

Proceeding to the next two ( verify and set pass-word) instructions under
Step 3 of Install Mysql the terminal provides the following to my attempt
to verify that Mysql5 is running:

bash-3.2$ ps ax | grep mysql

    69   ??  Ss     0:00.02 /opt/local/bin/daemondo --label=mysql5
--start-cmd
/opt/local/etc/LaunchDaemons/org.macports.mysql5/mysql5.wrapper start ;
--stop-cmd /opt/local/etc/LaunchDaemons/org.macports.mysql5/mysql5.wrapper
stop ; --restart-cmd
/opt/local/etc/LaunchDaemons/org.macports.mysql5/mysql5.wrapper restart ;
--pid=none
    2980 s000  S+     0:00.00 grep mysql
bash-3.2$

And Terminal responds:

bash-3.2$ mysqladmin5 -u root -p password xxxxx
Enter password:
mysqladmin5: connect to server at 'localhost' failed
error: 'Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket
'/opt/local/var/run/mysql5/mysqld.sock' (2)'
Check that mysqld is running and that the socket:
'/opt/local/var/run/mysql5/mysqld.sock' exists!

to my attempt to set my Mysql pass-word.

Any suggestions on resolving the problem with the socket will be helpful
Thanks,
Dave
