Here is Smit's answer.

Pros of minidlna :

- Has thumbnail support. As in, when you share your pics using this tool, and you try to look at them from a TV or phone, thumbnails get generated properly.

- Works on all devices.

Cons :

- User has to install the binary and point the path in the app (Like in Panorama tool)

- Doesnt support hierarchies. It will extract pics from the children and just put it flat.

- Doesnt support virtual albums. ("Tags" and "Searches")

- Uses UPnP 1.0.0 which might get deprecated in a couple of years (Technical)

Pros of hupnp :

- No need to install any binary.

- Supports hierarchies and virtual albums.

- Uses latest UPnP protocols.

Cons:

- Doesnt work on sony devices. An entire month was spent on this, still couldnt figure it out :-/. Then the library writer got busy eventually and stopped responding.

- Very bad thumbnail support.

Dmitri, can you please share the information you get from Smit with the mailing list afterwards? Would be indeed nice to know, what the difference between the options is...

Thank you!

Best regards,
Den

He has implemented this tool for GoSC 2012 and this year he will mentor new students...
