ok - I've found my problem (one at least). Thanks Andrew for the
interpretation. I use Gentoo and had not enable the xmp use flag for
compiling exiv2. Will enable that and recompile programs that can use
it.

Martin: ok - I understand that. In DK I separate out my files by file
directories, so I have a date parent directory with the untouched
raws, then a jpeg subdirectory for images sized for web. And I have a
"working" subdirectory for tiffs or photoshop psd's. So with the way I
am set up I couldn't really select all the images unless I filter
somehow. Lightroom shows all images in subdirectories if you choose,
so it would be very easy to do as you do. Maybe DK has that capability
too to show all images in subdirectories.. but I find it confusing so
see all versions of an image at once.
