weird. For me, it's take 500ms... I manage 10.000 items on this
computer. i use SQlite too...

Sound like something is broken in your BD file.

To investiguate :

- make a backup of your digiKam DB file.
- remove it and rebuild DB from scratch
- try again and look differences.
