I haven't done this myself, but here is one way to go about this. First off, you might want to write metadata to photos. You can do this by using the the Image -> Write Metadata to Image command. This will ensure that you won't lose your tags. This approach works best with JPEG files, though. If you use digiKam 2.0 beta, you can enable the XMP Sidecar feature which lets you save metadata in .xmp file. This offers a much faster way to save metadata and it works well with RAW files. Use then the Database migration tool (Settings -> Database Migration) to switch from SQLite to MySQL. Create a folder on the NAS and add the folder as an album in digiKam. Move then the photos from the local album to the one on NAS. That should do the trick. Before you proceed, try the migration on a small scale. Create a new local album, copy a few photos to it, and do the migration. If everything goes well, you can migrate your entire photo collection.

Best,
Dmitri

Subject: [Digikam-users]  large picture + DB migration

Hello all,

I would like to get advice on what is the best methodology to migrate from my computer to a NAS. I'm planning to shift from SQLite to MySQL in the process. This is how I would proceed:
    * backup of my current picture folders (of course)
    * copy of my pictures folders (or collections) to the NAS
    * creation of the MySQL DB within Digikam
    * migration from the current SQLite to MySQL using Digikam migration tool
    * Deletion of my computer picture collections (in Digikam)
    * Creation of the new NAS picture collections (in Digikam)
However I'm unsure if this is the safest path/recommended methodology? More specifically, how will digikam figure out that the NAS newly created collections are in fact my old picture collections under a new location?

My picture collection is several 100 Giga bytes large, with tagging of pictures for 6 years now... so relatively sizeable thing and I don't want to loose my tags. Most of them are stored within the pictures, but there are still the raws...

Any advice would be much appreciated thank you!
Nicolas.
