I used Philip Johnsson's ppa for 1.7 on 10.10. It seems to be working
pretty well. Here's the link:

Somewhere someone had the issue that other things besides digikam got
updated, which broke something. The work-around is simple - enable the
ppa, install digikam, then disable the ppa and don't use it for
non-digikam stuff.
