[Digikam-users] metadata date fields

I'm trying to understand how the exif date fields are used. I see three
fields:

   Exif.Image.DateTime
   Exif.Photo.DateTimeOriginal
   Exif.Photo.DateTimeDigitized

Initially, they are all set to the same date/time, the time the photo
was taken. If I edit the image and save it all three values are
unchanged.  Shouldn't something change to indicate the time that the new
image was created? Otherwise what is the point of having multiple
fields?
