Take a look at the nice tutorial by Elle Stone at;

and for the (proprietary) quirks manufacturers use to get 
nice looking jpeg's from RAW;

Printing tweaks is another (different) story.

These tutorials are in the works, and will hopefully find 
their way into Digikam documentation.
