Great! (No idea what screwed up things though)

Yes, they would be lost (unless you configured
digikam to store tags and ratings in the files themselves, see
http://docs.kde.org/development/en/extragear-graphics/digikam/using-setup.html#setup-embeddedinfo

The database scheme is documented in
  http://websvn.kde.org/branches/extragear/kde3/graphics/digikam/DBSCHEMA.ODS?view=log
(and for the upcoming 0.10 for KDE4 see
  http://websvn.kde.org/trunk/extragear/graphics/digikam/DBSCHEMA.ODS?view=log
 the release plan is here:
  http://www.digikam.org/?q=about/releaseplan
)

 cdigi: command line and service menu tool to extract data from Digikam
sqlite database and produce nice HTML galleries.
http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.php?content=15103
might be helpful.

Concerning a collection of queries: we don't have such thing
right now, but I think it would be a very welcome addition
to the wiki,
  http://wiki.kde.org/tiki-index.php?page=digikam

Best, Arnd
