This suggestion looks good for me. I vote for it !
I think it would really be an improvement.
I also hope it will be possible to keep focus on thumbnail view when 
Comments/Tags sidebar is shown. But Gilles already said it may be 
necessary to implement a "focus proxy", so we'll see :)
