I have even slower results than you but digiKam works much faster:

root at localhost ~ # hdparm -tT /dev/hdc1

/dev/hdc1:
 Timing cached reads:   266 MB in  2.00 seconds = 132.97 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  178 MB in  3.04 seconds =  58.61 MB/sec
root at localhost ~ #

I wonder how Gerhard gets his results...
