Don't know if it could help you :

I experienced such a problem with a broken CompactFlash card (in fact some 
kind of Microdrive made by Magicstore). The card was the problem, not the 
camera nor any card reader. 
 
Have you tried with another CF card ?

Do you have any CF reader you could use to test if the problem comes more from 
the card or from the camera ?

(Anyway, my point is that a (PCMIA or USB) card reader is definitively simpler 
and safer to use, and far more friendly for the camera batteries.)
