Under mandriva 2006, i use :

[gilles at portable-gc apps]$ autoconf --version
autoconf (GNU Autoconf) 2.59
Written by David J. MacKenzie and Akim Demaille.
...

...without problems. Also, i recommend you to look the README file about 
depencies.
