Meanwhile I just fixed the error which was stupidly 100% on my part:
previous version of digikam had not cleanly uninstall itself (I guess
this is a gentoo bug) and the leftover bits messed up the new
installation dependencies.  After getting rid of all the debris, the
clean install from svn works just perfectly.
