The second point to check is code from PreviewTask is well adapted to all
situation.
I add comment and i polished source code. Look here :

Code relevant to load preview is given from line 211 to line 460. The rest is
cache management and post processing. You can see the different between RAW and
non RAW image.

Note that in your case, the "dcraw -e " to extract manually embedded JPEG is
performed by KDcrawIface::KDcraw::loadEmbeddedPreview().
