--- Comment #2 from Elle Stone <l.elle.stone at gmail.com> ---
The difference between writing to an XMP sidecar file and
writing to an image file is:

*It really is possible to resynchronize the image metadata with the
database if you set digiKam up to write to the image file. "How" is
not intuitive, but it can be done.

*I haven't found any way to synchronize the image metadata with the
databse if I set digiKam up to write to an XMP sidecar file instead of
to the image file.

See
http://ninedegreesbelow.com/photography/digikam-how-to-synchronize-images-database.html
for step-by-step instructons on how to synchronize the image metadata
with the database after rearranging the tag tree.

See http://ninedegreesbelow.com/temp/digikam-sidecar.html for my
failed attempts to get the XMP sidecar files to synchronize with the
database.
