Understood. This is a rather important issue in scanning because 
films differ from vendors (Kodak, Fuji) and you may use settings that
oversaturate or over expose the colors / light.

If you cannot preview, it can prove hard to acquire photos from 35mm
films.

Probably. You can check using Xsane. The Kodak settings proved to work
for me. There are also settings for scanning diapo (positive and
negative).
