Reiser4 can do it (and lots more) and is stable, but not field tested enough to be the default file system everywhere. I don't know what will happen with Hans Reiser, but I hope (really) that if he doesn't continue his FS, then it will be taken on by some group that can talk better with the kernel team, and it will be integrated into the kernel and maintained properly.

The only reason why it is not the default FS today on Linux, and actually the reason why ext3 and now ext4 exist at all, are politics. Argh.
