With the advent of KDE 3.5 (Or was this available before 3.5?) KDE can handle dbus/hal events itself, so when a device gets connected an eerily windows-esque type window opens asking what you want to do. With a bit of HAL messing-aboutery, it's more than possible to simply get KDE to automatically open "digikam --detect-camera" when your camera's inserted.
