Without having had time to look at this myself, I'd say I agree with
you. It seems unnecessary to ask (repeatedly at that) about
something that is so easily undone (by simply unassigning the tag).
Very good point :)! I must have missed this issue, otherwise I would
probably have suggested something similar.

I'm not sure this is a good solution. The user is kept a bit in the
dark about the state of his tags that way. She wants to know which
tags are already there, whichever way. I don't think we should take
the possibility of seeing them directly away by hiding any hint
about which tags actually exist. And I don't think it is enough that
in thumbnail view you can see the list of assigned items under the
image. When assigning a tag, you simply need to have _all_ of them
in view to make your tagging decision.
As it happens, Sébastien Laoût, the developer of Basket, has the
same problem in his app when tagging with the context menu. He is
right now working on a solution to the overlapping of icons and
checkboxes. You can look at the latest status of his patch in these
screenshots:

and
http://www.uni-koblenz.de/~trilliti/bilder/checked_menuitems/Tags_Checks_New_Empty.png.
I have made another mockup that still improves on this idea a bit,
by drawing empty checkboxes for unassinged tags and also aligning
all text labels vertically, see it here:
http://www.uni-koblenz.de/~trilliti/bilder/checked_menuitems/Tags_Checks_boxed_mockup.png.
Sébastien assured me that this can probably be realized (he draws
the icons himself and uses the space where the icon used to be as a
space for the checkmark).
He told me he would try to work it out and already proposed to
forward his patch to you so you could also implement it in digikam
:).
Regards,
Tina
