Summary: Use collection image (or part of) as label icon
           Product: digikam
           Version: unspecified
          Platform: unspecified
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: wishlist
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
        AssignedTo: digikam-devel kde org
        ReportedBy: jesjimenez gmail com

Version: (using KDE KDE 3.4.0)
Installed from: Unlisted Binary Package

Currently, it's possible to associate a custom icon to a label. This icon can either be a predefined icon, or an external image. It would be wonderful it it was possible to use one of the images in the collection as the icon. Even better, it should be possible to select just part of an image as the label icon.

Let me explain this with an example: Suppose I've defined different labels for the people that appears in the images, and I want that each label icon is the actual picture of the person in question. Currently, I would need to choose an image, open it in a photo retouching software, extract the person's picture, save it in some folder, and then associate it with the label. If the feature I propose was implemented, it would be enough to select one of the images of the collection, and eventually select with some kind of rectangle tool the area that I want to be shown as the label icon.

This way of setting label icons would be easier, wouldn't need a separate folder for icons (each label would just store an image reference and some rectangle coordinates), and wouldn't break if some day I move my collection to another folder. Despite not knowing the insides of Digikam, I don't think it's overly difficult, neither: the rectangle tool to select part of an image is already in the image editor, so maybe an "Assign selection as label icon..." option would do the trick.

Thanks for your attention
