no error message.

and I _can_ see the exifs in the property dialog box in the files when they are here
is that what you need? (digikam is _not_ in /usr in my install)
jdd peter-suse:/opt/kde3/lib> ls | grep exif
libkexif.la
libkexif.so
libkexif.so.1
libkexif.so.1.0.0

I may try to compile digikam.
