Ok, I think I have thought out a way of using the autoStyle stuff in here (bus trip to the office can be productive). I'll need to check the feasibility when I see the code.
The idea is the following. Chamge the TextTool's signal charFormatChanged(QTextCharFormat charFormat) to charFormatChanged(QTextCharFormat charFormat, QTextCharFormat blockCharFormat). Then the SimpleCharacterWidget (which I think is the sole listener to that signal) can call the autoStyle with the current character style (or paragraph style) as parent. If the autoStyle is empty, we don't show the + sign, if not, then we show the + sign.
