Taking a rough guess here, you have probably installed a Linux distro that
doesn't ship MP3 and other patent encumbered codecs per default for legal
reasons. Renaming files accomplishes nothing, you need to install the
required codecs package (see http://amarok.kde.org/wiki/MP3). If you told
us more, we could say more.
