A big plus of PA distribution is that it has forced some ALSA
applications to shape up, like Skype.

In addition, one could argue it seems redundant that Phonon also tries
to manage devices, since every other platform (PA, Windows-sound, OS-X
Core Audio) can already do this.

So it is worth the time to help Phonon integrate with PA correctly.
Both because it will give KDE users a better experience (instead of
having two redundant ways to manage their sound), and also because it
will continue to push ALSA development as well, indirectly.

Everyone wins once this stuff starts working together.
