If VLC has the same licensing deal that allows it to play MP3s
legitimately in the U.S., I wouldn't be terribly surprised if VLC ends
up replacing Gstreamer -- especially if it's being maintained by someone
in the VLC community and is less buggy.

It's interesting that Gstreamer is cross platform (AFAICR) but they're
not using just that one backend on Windows/Mac/Linux...
