[PATCH] fix typos, remove obsolete code

Hi,

while going through the code for some debugging, I stumbled upon some typos 
and a useless if clause which does exactly the same as the one right above it. 
It is not really worth making a bug report, so I hope this is the right place 
to post the attached patch.
