To solve my problem I did download xine-lib, xine-ui and amarok-xine as a rpm (could find it as a source package) and installed. gstreamer would not ever work properly on setting the audio level. So, I downloaded amarok 1.4 (for kde 3.5.9) and compiled and installed it. Now Amarok will work with xine. Amarok is hard to loose - so group please keep it up.

Erm, did you try installing phonon-backend-xine?

I would have more sympathy if you weren't responding to a thread where
people are talking about using phonon-xine!
