Amarok and Xine can't play MP3, but VLC and MPlayer can

No, you don't understand.  It's not that I don't have the right
packages installed to play MP3's; I play MP3's all the time in Amarok.
 It's that I have some MP3 files that Xine and Amarok cannot play,
while MPlayer and VLC can.
