entries not updated in the db when editing tags

i have a strange problem with 1.4 branch that has appeared some time ago.

whenever i edit a track tags, these changes are not made to the mysql 
database - only to the file itself.

i briefly enabled mysql query logging - there were no attempts to update 
tags information.

if i update the collection, amarok notices the changed files and adds a 
second copy of them (leaving both the original entry and the newly 
edited version in the db).

any ideas what could cause this ? any debugging hints ?
