For models which do not support standalone organization of playlists, like Sansa, this means having some other application which can transfer playlists, which means amaroK.

Scott--

If you have the right plugins built (which takes a good maintainer, or
building from source) Amarok can support devices handled by libifp,
libkarma, libnjb, libmtp, and libgpod. So it handles quite a lot of the
devices on the market.

However, just because a library supports a device doesn't mean that that
device is well-behaved. For instance, a large number of MTP devices are
broken in one way or another because of manufacturers not properly
adhering to spec (great, right?) So it might be worth emailing the
library maintainers with a few of your alternatives and asking, from a
brokenness perspective, which device is best.
