Abstract idea of Song instead of pure file management

Jud,

There is at least one song identification system being developed (for
post-2.0) and another one as a possibility (they would work different
ways and be useful for different things).  These would complement,
rather than replace, Amarok's existing file tracking capabilities.

Whether these would help your problem, I'm unsure.  Assuming the quality
differences are not enough to cause the song identification scheme to
fail to correlate songs, it should then be fairly simple to be able to,
say, make a biased playlist that lets you add the highest quality
version of any given song.

Hopefully, as these are put into place, the use-cases you talk about
will be realized.
