a simple question "up/down ?" has spawned a whole bunch of other 
possibilities :)

at first i though "wha ?" - but up/down (and left/right would suffer 
from the same problem) is hard to distinct at track start/end as there 
is little detail.
maybe a "clock" would be slightly better at this ?
