I don't know what engines Kubuntu has but you could try Helix.

Also, I do know that the xine/flac problem is fixed in xine-cvs.  When xine 
1.1.3 comes out pester your maintainers for it.  Flameeyes has also fixed a 
bunch of other bugs...
