Hum, yes that's true.

But there are online music magazines.
They already aggregate new albums for you, they could be a starting point.
Perhapse it would requiere to visit one site per music genre, but much better 
than one site per group.

Perhapse there is already existing sites that do such notifications.

Or better, sites that lists whole discographies (and paroles) of a lot of 
artists.
It would means parsing HTML to know the whole discography of an artist and 
then comparing to the discs the user already have.
But this is doable.

At worst, a new file format should be created and ask every sites to adopt it.
A few years ago, while RSS wasn't existing, people would replyed "there is no 
other way to know if a website has news than visiting every sites one per 
one". Instead, the good way was to invent RSS and ask every websites supports 
it.
But I agree this one will be difficult without major other music players 
adopting it. Major as in "Windows Media Player" and "iTunes"... But at least 
for iTunes they already have "iTunes Music Store" so they do not need such 
fileformat.
