trunk open again

Heya :)

I've just tagged 2.3.1 so trunk is unfrozen again.
I'd like to encourage everyone to help Ian get the smoke bindings into
trunk asap so they can get a lot of testing. This should be one of the
priorities for the next release. Can we make a commitment to have them
in trunk in two weeks latest?
