(i fear this is more a UI consistency thing - personally i don't like tooltips 
at all, but if you use the, you should do consistently. whether one can drop 
it in this particular case therefore needs a larger discussion, i fear :-(

i guess it slides out on click at least. my solution would have been to 
measure the time between enter event and click. if that is unreasonably fast, 
one can assume that the enter event was generated by the system and thus the 
click would not toggle mute but show the slider.
Then, in a bold move, grab the mouse and wait for an external click to hide 
the slider...

think at least christoph feck uses a pen on a regular base, i'm gonna ask 
him...

"will" - likely.
But depending on the screen size, many (including amarok) would require a 
major UI overhaul (think of amarok's defaul layout on sth. about the size of 
an iPhone...)
