I agree completely with Alex. To sum it up:

1) Use plugins internally where it makes sense (bundled).
2) Allow 3rd parties to write extensions with scripting languages, using dbus 
or Kross.

So basically, no fundamental change from what we have now, but with enhanced 
scripting features for third party developers.

Binary 3rd-party plugins are the way to hell. As Alex said, a Windows-only 
program might be able to afford it, but we surely can't. (and I also think 
there is no need).
