Shutdown-Options

This thread relates to the power-button-freeze bug (
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=282639 ).
I thought we should clarify the expected results here once and for all
and then put it in the bug ticket.
The force-power-off on long press is unassailable, I guess (and I don't
know if it can be changed
anyway, since it seems to be a hardware function, right?).
So what should happen on short press? Going to suspend (to ram) as
Aaron suggested seems to make sense.
Though on the other hand, e.g. the n900 shows shutdown options when the
power button is pressed and
this seems useful too (but then again, the n900 also has a designated
suspend/resume button).
But since we removed the logout/shutdown button from the peak bar, if
we don't offer shutdown options
for the power button, how do users shut their devices down (or
hibernateor reboot them) then? I don't think
only offering suspend is a good idea, since users may well want to shut
their device down if they
don't intend to use it for a while and don't want to keep it attached
to mains supply. Or they might
want to reboot it every once in a while because it starts acting a
little weird or because they've
updated something that requires a reboot (okay, this might be triggered
by the package manager).
I don't think adding the lock/logout plasmoid to an activity or the
widget strip is the solution,
because
1. This is not the natural place for a shutdown button
2. Accidentally pressing the lock button results in your being unable
to unlock (or will this be
fixed when we have a proper touch-enabled lock effect in kwin?).
I don't think shutting down or rebooting is an entirely "geeky" thing
to do, since especially most
"regular users" I know always shut their desktops or laptops down when
they don't use it as they're
still suspicious towards suspend or hibernate. Most users are used to
their mobile device going
into suspend automatically after a while, but I'm pretty sure many will
miss shutdown or reboot if
it is not easily accessible.

Thomas
