With this I fully agree

With this not so much - both applications, and recomms have the same goal 
- to get the user to some data.

The main problem for me here (why this doesn't work) is that the app menu 
is an application-oriented UI, while the recomms and the activities want 
to be document-oriented.

Adn for that reason I don't see mixing both in the same panel can work...
