We've actually implemented poppler-based pdf rendering for harmattan office. Because of the poppler license, this will be open-sourced, most probably (but this is dependent on Nokia) under LGPLv2+. That means that we've got a completely qgraphicsview based pdf rendered mostly for free, once the N9 hits the streets :-). It should be really easy to integrate that into Calligra Active.
