This is such an important initiative for reducing e-waste by making it
possible to use devices to the end of the hardware lifecycle, not the
end of the software lifecycle.

I am glad to see it is moving forward and upward in the EU!

Cheers,
Joseph

Hello Joseph P. De Veaugh-Geiss,

Once again, we want to thank you for being there and supporting our
Upcycling Android initiative by signing our Open Letter “The right to
install any software on any device”.

In November, a delegation from the Free Software Foundation Europe
(FSFE) handed over our Open Letter to Tabea Rößner, Chair of the
Digital Affairs Committee at the German Bundestag.
[https://fsfe.org/news/2023/news-20231115-01.html] Rößner announced
that she would give the Open Letter to Steffi Lemke, Germany's Federal
Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and
Consumer Protection.

It has been a year since we first published our Open Letter [1] on the
universal right to install any software on any device. So far, more
than 3,000 individuals and 147 civil society organisations have decided
to sign the letter and support our four demands:

- Users have the right to choose the operating systems and software
running on their devices.

- Users have the right to choose which service providers they connect
their devices to.

- Devices should be interoperable and compatible with open standards.

        - Source code for drivers, tools and interfaces will be
published under a free licence. After this first hand over, we are
planning to deliver the letter to decision-makers at EU level as well.
We will let you know when that happens. And remember that even though
our Upcycling Android initiative [2] officially ended, all related
material is freely available for use by you and others who want to
continue promoting Free Software while overcoming software obsolescence.
We also continue to advocate for the right to install any software on
any device with initiatives such as Router Freedom and other Device
Neutrality activities [3].

If you want to continue supporting our digital rights, you can subscribe
to our general email updates and our experts will inform you about
current news, events, activities, and how you can contribute [4].

Our work would not be possible without the the donations by our
supporters. If you can afford, please become a supporter:

Thank you very much!

Best regards, Ana Galán
