Failed to load image '(Unknown image format)'

For 'reasons' I did a clean install of Debian Bookworm and then copied 
my dK database from backup. I then compiled digiKam 8.2.0 from source. 
All looks good except when double-clicking on a thumbnail to get a 
preview I'm getting the message: 'Failed to load image'.

I've checked the image and it is on disk and all ok. I can view it with, 
e.g. geeqie.

This is happening with all images.

With logging turned on I can see the following message in the log:

I've tried running the Appimage and it's fine, which makes me think 
perhaps I missed a dependency compiling it from source?
