I have a five years old Epson R360 now after using mostly HP
printers for ages; chose it explicitly because of good linux
drivers. The 6-cartridge ink system distributes ink
consumption fairly well, only sometimes I wish for a bigger
black cartridge.

The built in software gives even better results, straight
from USB-drive. Unfortunately this built-in-software in my
printer does neither support PNG nor PDF (but newer models
should - check this!). And it's proprietary!

Another point; vertical paper-feed at the back of a printer
is nice to minimize the footprint - but has tendency of
collecting more dust and small objects. Resulting in
unreliable paper traction. Also, you'll be more limited in
the choice of thick papers (my very old HP A3
straight-through printer can print on 6mm thick cardboards).

Good luck,
