In short I would sum it up under efficiency and convenience.
You can avoid an extra input that is actually unnecessary.
It's like Windows 7 which had the perfect layout to shutdown: 2 clicks to
shutdown. Every new version added the need of pressing another button to get
the same result.
The main idea is to make the counter adjustable - it kinda already is through a
config file, but this isn't really intuitive. It is also about adjusting the
setting without it being overwritten by a new update.
