1) I looked in the Desktop Effects KCM:
The "Blur" or "Background Contrast" effects are apparently "not supported by
the compositor" (see also https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=342934 ->
https://bugsfiles.kde.org/attachment.cgi?id=92061).

2) Can this be caused by the wrong graphics driver? (In other applications I
use I experience no noticeable problems.) Is this maybe one of the things which
Wayland will fix? :) Or would I still have to look for another driver?
