Upgrades now work because I did the following:

I decided to continue with the updates and did:
apt-get install --reinstall --install-suggests plasma*

This install went OK and when it asked for the choice of lightdm or sddm, this
time I chose lightdm. Although this dm continues to ask for login whereas I did
not need to previously (I had set it that way) many of the previous problems
(especially updates) have resolved. 

kde_X11 continues to crash often whenever a window already on screen is
overwritten and then the dm has to redraw it behind the new window. The larger
the windows, the more likely it is to happen.
